I was a whipper-in at a hunt in B.C. many years ago and we had a 
mysterious parasitic bronchial and lung infection in the hounds which 
was eventaully traced back to the snails in the well and pipes, so I 
would definitely not try it with a horse tank.  If a weekly cleaning and 
disinfectant with bleach doesn't work you might try some goldfish or 
algae eaters.  I've known several cattle farmers that do that .  At the 
end of the summer the fish will be HUGE!
