David,
There are a couple of great books out there on the training of young 
horses for endurance. 
1. America's Long Distance Challenge by Karen Paulo
2. Endurance Riding, From Beginning to Winning by Lew Hollander
3. Training Racehorses in your Backyard. I can't remember the author, 
but the book has some good safe ideas in it.
Basically you want to teach the horse some foundation such as ground 
manners, reining, trailering and camping. This can all be done without 
ever getting on the horse by using the Lyons on Horses methods. But now 
we're not talking about endurance related topics and that's getting to 
be a real no-no. So if you have and questions feel free to email me to 
avoid flaming from the die-hards.
