Hi, Donna--
Thoughts to consider--founder, navicular, and sole abcesses.  X-rays might be
in order to rule these in or out.  Also consider nutritional deficiencies in
your area that might cause the hoof structures to not be normal.
If there is evidence of founder or chronic abcesses (sometimes they go
together) check his thyroid levels.
