Whoa there....I have an alpha mare that will kick WITHOUT WARNING at times.
You are right, most of the time there are warning signs, but once in a
while, she will actually "go after" someone else.  Not crowding or in her
"space" at all.  Most of the time I can catch her, but she has landed a few :-((
