Determining conditioning distances



Is there some formula that can be used to determine how far you have ridden
during a normal conditioning ride?  (ie a good, working walk for X minutes
= X miles, a good working trot for X minutes = X miles or some such
formula. ;-))  It sure would be nice to know how far I'm going on any given
day.  How do you know when you're conditioned well enough to enter a
competition?
