LD Training/Ride 'n Tie

Hear! Hear! There are probably lots of folks out there who have no
concept of how hard their horses work on an endurance ride. Wouldn't it be
great if every able-bodied rider had to graduate from an "endurance training
camp" before he or she could participate in their first AERC ride? As part
of the curriculum, not only would the horse have to go through an
established conditioning program, so would the rider! Ideally, to receive
his/her "certificate of completion" from the program, the rider would be
required to train for and complete one 5K, one 10K, one marathon, and one
50K trail run! To top it all off, we bring all horses and riders together
on graduation day for the big 40 MILE RIDE 'N TIE EVENT!! Top horse gets a
pretty halter with its name embroidered on the side, and winning riders get
free orthopedic work for a month from the surgeon of their choice!! What a
novel idea!! It could revolutionize the sport!!! It could end all petty
bickering with regard to the definition of "true endurance!" (Not to mention
freeing e-mail inboxes across the nation for receipt of more meaningful
posts, such as discussions on favorite trail songs and utilization of guns
at endurance rides.) Catch ya later -- I'm off to copyright the "endurance
training camp" idea before "Shufflin' Steve" Shaw does. (Special cycling
program offered to all out-of-shape riders with shin splints, at reasonable
rates). Happy Trails!

If anyone wants to test or train their horse at a limited distance try
doing any of the ride & ties. It not only puts your horse through a
great race situation but also gets you to see the trail from their
perspective...
