What you describe here is pretty much limited to NATRC--there are many CTR
systems tht do NOT include this sort of thing.  I cut my teeth on the old
Rocky Mountain Circuit back in the early 70's, and while I would not go back
either, what I learned there has been a strong foundation for the rest of my
distance career, and I would strongly recommend a similar program to ANY
newcomer.  My reason for not wanting to go back is more like not going back to
first grade now that I have a DVM degree.  Still, my fabulous first-grade
teacher taught me skills that I still use daily.
