After they are cut you have to be careful that the short cut off stubb
is not rubbing on your horse and pointing to the outside.
Anyone every seen any without the tongues?  If so where?

What I have done is taken a chisel or hacksaw and cut off the section that 
wraps around the ring. You have to be carefull not to cut the strings, but 
there's nothing left to gouge either you or the horse.
