I did most of my night riding in the Southeast, on woods trails. Most
ride managers, at least on night sections of the trail, do sufficient
clearing that this is not a problem. Just to be on the safe side,
when trotting or cantering along a dark deep-woods trail with no
light, I would hold one arm up in front of my face. Of course, I also
wore a helmet. In many miles of such riding I was never injured.
