Rabies
Chris, here in Marin County (CA), almost everyone gives an annual rabies
booster to horses, cats, dogs (in fact required for dog licensing). We
are in a high rabies endemic area. About 30 years ago there was a
celebrated case of horse rabies at a local Arabian show/breeding ranch.
What happened: the stallion sickened, acted up progressively to the
point he had to be put down. Half of the brain was sent to the county
lab which blew the test, saying no rabies. Meanwhile a mare this stud
had bred showed the same symptoms up in WA state and was put down, only
her postmortem correctly showed rabies. WOW! Then the _other_ half of
the stud's brain, which had been saved, was retested and showed, guess
what, rabies. Then everything hit the fan, because quite a few people
had handled the stud with no protection. They had to undergo all the
vaccines which in those days were painful. No humans got it,
fortunately, but then the lawsuits began....anyhow, it's routine for us,
we hold shot clinics annually and to my knowledge nobody's had problems
with 4-in-1, rhino, flu, rabies, whatever. Cheers, (;-), Connie
