The big problem in disinfecting after an outbreak is how does one assure that
one has thoroughly gotten a disinfectant in contact with all the
contamination? Most strong disinfectants will kill the bacteria, but if the
horse has been outside at all while shedding, the bacteria can be in the
ground, and it is extremely hardy. I would only feel secure about
disinfecting if the horse had spent the entire time in a stall with completely
washable surfaces--not a reality for most of us. Still, one does the best one
can by scrubbing surfaces with disinfectants and soaking ground with solutions
of iodine, chlorox, or whatever is practical.
