Re : Leasing Mares

Hi Dawna! Since I've done exactly what you are contemplating, just thought
I'd give you my experience. What I did was lease a mare (that meant paying
her feed bills, vet bills, farrier, for the term of her pregnancy plus the
nursing period of the foal). It was a great experience, I imprint trained
the
foal at birth. I also found that "buying" a horse this way costs probably
triple what it would cost to buy one as a yearling or even a three year old
ready to start "
I have leased two top quality mares in the last few years this very same
way without paying any other money to the owners . And also found out that
it cost about triple the cost of buying an older horse ready to start, but
I also got exactly what I hoped for and great endurance potentials ,
unfortuneately one of them broke a leg and had to be put down as a two year
old . The other is a beautiful well built coming two yr. old filly ,
granddaughter of Bezatal which is why I did this, to get the bloodlines
that I wanted . I definetly think it is the way to go if you don't want to
mess with having a broodmare around all the time .
