I liked your message that kids should learn to earn their own way.
Kids that always have everything handed to them on a silver platter
won't learn the value of working for their efforts, the value of a
dollar, and may become less productive members of society.
Maybe kids that ride free at rides could be assigned some small
"duties" to help ride management. I'm sure ride managers can come up
with some ideas. Not sure if all ride managers will be able to afford
to foot the bill for LD junior non-members in addition to per rider
fees though.

horse. Not one of mine to ride, and we have seven, but his very own.
At that point he asked around to see if he could clean stalls at the
stable where I trained and do other odd jobs for some of the local
farmers to earn money. He now owns his own horse, two saddles, and has
shown several times this year all with his own money. I have three
other sons who want to ride but they are not willing to work for the
shows.
