UMECRA's competitive rides (not endurance rides at UMECRA rides) had a no
boot protection rule for many years (Easy boots were considered shoes and
not considered), for the same reasons listed by the other competitive
groups. A few years ago the rule was changed to allow the use of boots, but
5 points out of 400 is deducted for each leg. You now do see some boots on
Midwest competitive horses. The thought process is a horse that doesn't
interfere is sounder than one that does no matter what the reason
(conformation, tiredness, training, shoeing, or bad luck).
