Hey, it was almost the gold (I know, that only counts in horseshoes and
hand grenades)...I was there to crew for the Central zone. 

 The night before the ride the riders were assigned pardners...that
included the "non-team" members.   Russell Brussard was on the team,
Lynda Corry was riding as an individual, but their horses traveled well
together so they were assigned to stay together.  Nina Warren & Melissa
Crain were paired up, and I believe Jan Worthington & Audrey Gherig (sp?)
 Sort of got rid of the idea that the individual riders could risk a
little more and go for the individual medals.  It was expected that they
too would sacrifice for a team win.

Gotta admit it worked great...had 4 riders in the top 10 at the 8 miles
to go check  (the other 2 not far behind)...then bumper to bumper crew
traffic on the road was parked ON TOP of the only turn marker (a big
white arrow on the ground) causing Lynda & Russell to miss a turn and end
up coming into a "P" stop from the wrong direction.  (enter weeping and
gnashing of teeth).  

I wouldn't be surprised if the USA doesn't use the same strategy over
there.
