Hi guys,
Do you know about the selection process in France?
They have a national team that they trust.
To make part of the team, the rider accumulates point by participating to great event : +1 if result in (not sure) first 1/4 of riders, 0 if just completion, -1 if pull. This can bring them to the so-called 'elite', which gives the right to knok at the door of the national team. National team members have a so-called 'joker' that they may use when they want to try a new horse, to avoid negative points if they pull.
Result is that they may condition their horse and prepare them for the event and not override them. For example, Nelson who was last year European Champion didn't participate to any competition in 1997.
Up to know the system was proving it was good (look at their results!). We will see this year.
