I recently bought a 4-year-old endurance gelding. This particular trainer starts his horses at age two. Indy is only 14.2, definitely a liability in any competitive timed event. His trainer's loss is my gain, as this is a superbly trained horse. He is currently in transition from race to pleasure/trail mount.
My concern is whether intensive training from age 2 with a lot of hours under a lot of weight could have damaged his legs. He moves beautifully and has sturdy legs but his knees are extra boxy and I worry about the soft tissues. Unlike his trainer, I am small and ride with the lighter English saddle, plus do not intend to work him as hard as you do in endurance.
I cannot at this time get a vet out here as we are at the center of El Nino (which is why I am typing instaead of with Indy.
