Well as someone whose has had 2 horses treated at different events, both
veterinarians charged me only for the materials (one case was tying up and
the mare was given 3 gallons of fluid intravenously in addition to being
tubed. With the IV kit and everything it came to $100.) Second case was
a very minor colic - vet gave banimine and tubed electrolytes (my own
actually) Cost was only $18.00. I consider these costs my entirely
my own responsibility, I try hard to avoid needing treatment for my horses
and I don't want to pay extra entry fees to have management cover this
kind of cost. Since a vet at a ride is already being compensated
for their time it seems fair for them to only charge for the materials, but
it would not be outrageous for them to charge for time as well. At one
of our local rides the manager required a very recent health certificate
because of possibility of V.S. - a lot of people hadn't heard of this
condition and the ride vet did the inspections and charged the normal health
certificate fee.
