weight divisions

Hi all,
I've been a long time lurker and now that I have been thoroughly bitten by
the endurance 'bug' I have a question to ask. I attended a NATRC ride two
years ago and was wondering how they assign people to weight divisions. My
friend and I that attended together are nearly the same height/weight, but our
horses at that time were greatly different. I was riding a 4 year old 14.3 hand
horse and she was mounted on a 7 year old 15.2 hand horse. They took weight
estimates of our horses using a tape around the girth, but I don't recall what
those were.
Is there a formula that is used? Would my division change if I were mounted
on a very large horse? Thanks in advance - please email me privately to avoid
