Competing Pregnant Mares

My understanding of why you do not want to compete a pregnant
mare has to do with the temperature of the mare. As you
work the mare, her temperature will go up. A certain amount
is ok for the foal, but if the temperature goes too high,
then the foal can be damaged. Women are warned not to use
a hot tub or exert themselves beyound a certain point for
the same reason.

You can certainly keep on riding the mare, and you should,
up to the point where the mare says no more (9-11 months
usually). But I would not train to a high competitive
level with a pregnant mare.
