Tank Heaters

I used to have the floating type of tank heater. It was
a great toy to Elliot. Grab it and toss it. When I tied it
the fence, he almost made a nice brand in the fence. So now I have
the L shaped one that clamps to the tank.

Water is one of the strange liquids that freezes from the top
down. Thus, fish can live in a large lake that freezes over.
So, you want to keep the top of the water above 32 degrees F.
If you heat the bottom of the tank, the warm water will rise.

The heater I purchased has an adjustment for setting the thermostat.
It has temperature markings on it, but they are not correct.
I just increased the temperature a bit until no ice formed during
the night. The thermostat is actually near the top of the water
rather than at the bottom of the tank. This allows you to set
it more acurately. (As long as some dumb owner [me] doesn't leave
the hose attached to the faucet because the weather is warm, and
forgets to drain the hose because it won't freeze in this nice
weather, and then forgets everything when the temperature drops
from the 60s to the ones in a day.)
