Bandages

We had the fun of figuring out inexpensive bandaging last June when our
horse was severely kicked on her hind cannons by another horse in
pasture-who had a brand new pair of shoes on! Since it took over three
months to heal, we became quiet adept at our daily routine. We used a
telfa type pad-Johnson&Johnson, taped with waterproof first aid tape by
each corner to a large square of the J&J Wound cleansing gause. The
gause pads were cheaper than the telfa-but stick to the wound. Then we
applied some Furazone (I think that's the name-whatever antibacterial
creme you like) to the pad and stuck in on the wound. This held it to
the leg while we wrapped super cheap brown gause rolls we found at the
feed store around the leg to hold the bandage in place. Then we placed
self adhesive vet wrap over this-starting just above and ending just
below the other wraps. Finally we ended with a thin leg wrap that had
velcro ties. We precut the brown wraps so we had both legs done in about
10 minutes. The wounds ouzed alot for some time, so the cheaper gause
behind the telfa pad helped absorb it all. We usually ended up using
scissors to get it all off since the vet wrap gets stubborn-we would
reuse it until it wouldn't stick together anymore. So maybe some of
these ideas will help guide you.
