We have been riding for over twenty years and the age criteria has always
been Five years old for fifty miles or longer.
The original rules stated five years old , but because some riders tried to
push the traditional TB age status (one year old at the next year change)
many horses were really only long fours. It was decided to state the age
requirement as a definite number of months from birth, i.e. 60 months equal
five years so the rule is now that number of actual months, 60.
Rule making to substitute for owner restraint is never effective. Every one
then looks for loopholes (see reason for going to 60 months to force a full
five years, above)
It is the owner/riders responsibility to the horse that counts not the
control of the rules!!
