I am not sure where I read this, maybe EN, but I remember an article by
a women who was using a Standing Martingale on her horse and lead it up
to the edge of a river or lake for water. The horse put down its head
to drink and the bank crumbled. The horse fell into the water and
couldn't get his head above water or swim because of the tie-down and
drowned, despite the owners efforts to unhook the tie-down under water.
I recently bought a Running Martingale for my horse to use in
conjunction with an English Hackamore. The martingale clips to the
breast collar. I was told to adjust it so that the rings just reach the
horse's throat latch.
