Hi all! I have a friend whose treasured endurance horse is effectively
retired because he suffers from what the vets says is chronic tie-up. In
the pasture the horse is fine, running and playing with his buddies but on
the trail he can be ridden only for about 1 1/2-2 hours before his rear end
tightens up and he can hardly walk. But...after the 15 minute trailer ride
home, he gets out of the trailer as though nothing had ever been wrong!
This has been going on for over a year. He is fed generous amounts of hay
(alfalfa & oat each day) and no grain on a regular basis. For the past
several months, at a vet's suggestion, his owner has been giving him
electrolytes daily. Nothing much has changed.
I've suggested that they get another blood panel done to confirm the
original tie-up diagnosis and to see if anything else is out of line.
Supplementing with selenium and vitamin E seem like good ideas to me, too.
I'm also wondering if a good sheath cleaning might be in order to eliminate
any possibility of an irritation in that area.
Any ideas about what else ould be going on and what to do about it would
be considered with great interest!!! E-mail me privately if you want.
Thanks, Laney
