Locking in the stifle is caused by the patella being pulled over the
medial condyle of the patella groove by the medial patella ligament.
This can be the result of a congenital defect in the patella groove,
spasm of the hamstring muscle group and use of an un-conditioned horse.
If this condition becomes acute whereby the stifle stays locked then
surgery is required to free up the patella. Or if this condition becomes
routine on a daily or weekly basis surgery is again indicated. However,
if this condition occurs once and the horse is not lame after the lock
then diet and conditioning is recommended.
