padding your horse

I've come to the point where I need to pad my endurance horse. We live in a
rocky region at the base of a mountain range, so we do a lot of rocky hill
work. My question is do I pad him just up front, and if so why not pad him
all the way around? It dosen't make sense to me why we don't pad them
behind too. So all input is appreciated.
