I picked on this shoe because the Keg shoes we were using didn't seem to
have the holes punched at the right place to allow the shoe to fit any
way but tight (ie, file the hoof down to the shoe). Hal's hoofs have a
very thick if chalkey wall. This particular shoe seemed to take that
into account and like some other keg shoes allowed for variation of
thickness of the wall fore and aft, left and right (they are handed just
like Slypners).
One added bonus at this point in time was that Hal had stepped on a 3
inch nail and had been having trouble on soft ground, this shoe is
pretty thick and lifts his sole off the ground to help that. That's what
made me try them out.
The shoe's seem to have the same longevity as steel shoes, the back
shoes last 3 to four weeks before the nail heads disappear, the fronts
last more than twice as long. The wear is more exagerated though, they
look a little like wedge shoes towards the end of their life.
The shoes grip aspalt much better than steel shoes and we haven't
slipped on black top since using them. The manufacture claims that they
absord shock better (they claim to have tested this). This, I can not
vouch for, but from an engineering point of view sounds reasonable, it's
probably due to their thickness and lower modulus of elasticity
(relative to steel) and inherent additional damping in the material.
At 38 bucks for a set of four they are pricey compared to steel shoes
though, and they need E-6 or E-7 nails for the size that I use on Hal.
Before you ask, yes I did look at the WRP but they didn't look like they
would last a week and at the time they didn't make them big enough for
Hal, though I gather that they may be making size 8 (their size 8 is a
US size 3) by now.
