I hope i havn't confused some people with the last message that i posted
about ride handicaps in South Africa. Each ride or course has a handicap,
with 0 handicap being equivellant to an average speed of 23 kmh. This
doesnt mean that all horses that dont average 23 kmh are disqualified, it
is just a way of judging the degree of difficulty of a course, and making
team selection easier. For example if a course has a handicap of 8, the
average speed of the horse should be 15 kmh. Most of the horses of course
dont do those sort of speeds, as to finish is to win, but the top,
competative ones do, and they are the ones that are vying for places in the
various teams. We also have a maximum time of completing the various
distances. 8 hours for 80 km and 24hrs for 160km, which i think is similar
to your criteria.
Happy riding,
PS if anyone would like to ride in South Africa, contact me and i'll try
and find you a suitable horse.
