Overnight, my gelding has
developed what looks like either an abscess or an infected insect bite in the girth area just behind his foreleg. We went for an easy 1-hour trail ride last night, and he was fine when I put him away. When I went to the barn this afternoon, I noticed the (very obvious) swelling. It's not painful to him when I touch/squeeze it, but it does look nasty. Now, he DID have a small, healing girth sore in that area--and the fact that it's the swollen area surrounds that sore makes me suspicious.

Opinions on whether it's likely to be an insect bite infection, or a girth sore?

I hosed the spot for about 20 min., then washed it with Betadine, and finally rubbed Furacin into it.

Any other treatment ideas? Should I call the vet at this point?
