It sounds like you're referring to an automatic transmission oil cooler.
They been on the market for years and they really work. They are a small
horizontal unit that mounts right in front of your regular radiator, with
two hoses back to the tranny. From the sounds of it, one might have
prevented your blowout. I'd get it professionally installed so the shop
has the liability if the thing leaks.

I always thought engine heat was what you need to look out for, but a trip
up
to Yosemite (7000' elev.) and back overheated my tranny and most of the
fluid
went out the vent, leaving me with sufficient damage that the transmission
has to be replaced.

Engine was fine, though. It's a '92 Chevy 454 3/4 T with towing package
carrying big camper and modest 2-horse with one pony aboard.

I'm told there is an aftermarket product that can increase cooling capacity
of transmission. Anyone know what this is, how it works, where to get it?
