What you describe as animal instinct is also very true of humans. All
SCUBA divers carry knives, not to fight off sharks, but to cut their
diving buddy in the event a shark does get too close thus enhancing
their own survival chances. (:->)
Being a firm believer in Velcro saddles and riding breeches, my horse
has come to understand the firefighter's "You go, I go" philosophy. I
have occasionally asked my trusty steed to do something and received one
of those over the shoulder, Jack Elam one eyed squints which translates
into "Are you crazy?" Upon a closer look and second thoughts, the horse
was right. I, too, have no illusions about my horse running back to the
barn to get a rope to pull me from the quicksand. I suspect it would be
completely immobile laughing its haunches off. (:->)
