You're definitely not alone in your taste for Ara-Appaloosas! I'm
looking around for a sporthorse type Appy stallion to cross on my
Spanish/Egyptian mare in the next few years. The big problem seems to
be the proliferation of the heavy QH body build in most Apps nowadays.
It doesn't make sense to breed heavily built horses to lighter types.
I've seen quite a few of the mishappen individuals from such breedings
and it's enough to make me think the "breed like to like" oldtimers'
saying has some merit <g>.
The June '97 issue of the Appaloosa Journal has some nice Ara-Apps
pictured in the "Appaloosas on the Trail" article which starts on page
130. There's 'Bezadee' and 'Hydway Srpatapatch' for instance, which
from the looks of the pictures, are nice individuals. Erin McChesney's
nice mare, 'Cougar's Fete', is 3/4 Arab and 1/4 Appy, though she's not
colored out. Good luck in your search and let me know if you come
across any west coast breeders. ~Nikki
