We always to try to spend the night following the ride on site, then
drive home (with frequent water breaks) the following day. (As opposed
to driving home right after the event.) Our rule of thumb is - more
than a 4 hr ride means an extra night's stay. It's not very conducive
to accumulating vacation time at work, though.

We also continue electrolytes after the ride - I know that many people
stop after the vet out, but my feeling is that the horses are still
recovering - let them have what they need in their system. If they
don't need the lites, they'll just excrete them.
