In the last two weeks since my horse's diagnosis, I have not left
one stone unturned in my quest to learn more about this disease. Some
vets now, I'm sure, are running out the back door when they hear I have
called with my barage of questions.
I'm one of those people who don't give up easily and have to
question everything and need to know why, what, when and where, why me
and my horse. My husband calls it my arguemenative trait...I call it
curiosity.
Recently, my questions led me to talk to a number of people in the
homeopathic or holistic field. I have had people nice enough to return
my calls from across the country and have post it notes piled with
jotted quotes from various sources as well as information from different
horse supplement dealers, dynamite and ABC etc.
I feel compelled to share with you what I have learned because my
heart aches as I read of other ridecampers horses are diagnosed with
epm. I don't want others to go thru what Sareei and I are going thru.
First I want to say that this is what I have learned, repeating to
the best of my knowledge what I have gathered from others and though not
hard facts feel all of you should be aware of and am sure will be flamed
for what I'm about to suggest!

I wondered why my horse, when Joe Blow down the street with the
unthrifty nag is never sick. We have dates every other month on our
calenders for worming , shot schedules and stick to it to a tee. We
fuss and baby our horses more than the average Joe yet seemingly the
horse that are being diagnosed with epm are the racehorses, the jumper,
eventers, the endurance horses and it is becoming epedemic now.
WHY!!!!!!

This is a case of alittle is good but more is not neccessarily better.
Ivecterin (sp) wormer is a neuro transmitter inhibitor, as well as many
of the vaccines we give effect the neurological system. Epm is a
neurological disease. There is speculation that worming every 8 weeks
with ivecterin and yearly vaccines is weaking havoc with our horse's
immune system and effecting the neurological function as well. The
horse has been and is exposed to the protozoan that causes epm and many
have it in their system but until recently have been able to keep it in
check not unlike people who habor strep and other bacteria but don't
come down with the disease till they are stressed in some way.
ivecterin and some vaccines is believed by many now MAY be responsible
for setting up a situation, either by depressing the immune system or
effecting the neuro tissues in such a way that the protozoan can pass
the blood brain spinal fluid barrier. NOW!.I am not recommending
everyone stop worming and vacinating their horses. I know recently we
touched on the subject where a few people admitted that they have
stopped vaccines with the exception of tetnas but I want to make people
aware when they go down to the barn with the syringe and tube of wormer
how it effects the horse and to be aware of any subtle changes in their
horse's attitude and coordination. Think twice about treating them when
they had the sniffles the day before or was hauled 3 days ago in a
trailer for 10 hours of just did a 50 miler.
Drugs have helped rid us of many horrible diseases but with time.
like the pebble in the pond, the cause and effect we learn of different
sets of problems that present themselves with such methods as I'm
currently learning about hormone treatment for peri menopause...once
deemed as the greatest thing is now showing it's ugly head and
revealing it's darker side. We must be aware not everything is without
a price...for me I will worm only when it is neccessary and vaccinate
for tetnas becasue I'm convinced there is a corrolation to epm. I'm
sure the companies that make the products will argue but ask around and
you will find the same common thread.
Sareei and I will beat this, who starts treatment this week along with
alot of herbal and supplemental help. Linda
