Tevis odds and ends

Tammy Stucki and I had a great time working the in-timer station at
Michigan Bluff, since we got to see all the horses come through!

Quickly, Best Condition went to Ona ??, a woman from Estacada,
Oregon. Sorry, I don't have the rider list to verify her last name!
It was her first Tevis!

Four riders who had come in top ten took the wrong trail and
instead of retracing their way, went cross country. So, they were
bumped out of top ten, but the decision was to not disqualify them,
but put them in as last finishers. This included Shirley Delsart,
Mark Richtman, not sure of the others. Cassandra Schuler came in
top ten but declined to present for best condition. We saw Shirley
Delsart come in at the finish, and her horse looked just terrific!

Anyway, Michigan Bluff was really fun, as we got to see everyone,
and got firsthand info on pulls. I saw Steph T. come through, and
Nick Warhol. Nick showed a finish time, but they didn't announce
his name at the awards ceremony. Nick, can you elaborate? I was so
busy I didn't really get a chance to eyeball what riders were
wearing, or types of saddles, but we did notice a LOT of synthetic
Wintec-looking saddles, lots of saddles covered with sheepskin, and
saw at least 3 Sport Saddles go through. My "impression" was of the
majority of horses as being REALLY small, but with big feet! By
small, I mean about 14 hands or so. There were some
really thin horses, though several that showed for best condition
(including the mule) that didn't look like they dropped much weight
at all. We were doing temp and humidity all day, and we started at
10:00 at about 97 degrees. It cooled gradually to about 82. I
saw quite a few horses with equithotics on the front feet, and a few
with easy boots.

It was fun to see ridecampers Kimberly Price, Dorothy Beebee, Linda
Cowles and Sue Flagg, all at Michigan Bluff crewing. We didn't
hear "officially" that Karen Chaton was pulled, but had it relayed
by her crew. Lucy came by looking for Richard, but we weren't any
help with finding him!

Everyone seemed to think the weather could not have been better.
Driving down from Foresthill with the moon comming up over the
Sierras was awesome! It was a totally clear night.

I have to say that being a volunteer is the "easy" and fun way to
see
it. ONce the vet check closed, we were done, other than helping
close down and pack up. Due to a computer glitch and clueless motel
clerk, we got two nights at a very nice motel for $20. Sure was
nice to have that large bed, shower and pool! Only difficulty was
sthe trip home. We got pulled between Auburn and Williams when our
car became severly dehydrated. All other vital signs were fine,
but we didn't have any electrolytes (coolant). Experienced
veterinarian (trucker) helped us cool down the the core temp, and
thought we could continue to the next check. Fortunately we carried
enough water. So, even though we dehydrated twice more, we were
able to limp home.
