I am sad to report that an unfortunate mishap occurred about midway
through the second loop of the second day. From what I could learn,
Gus Politis and Joy Mahler were trotting down a fairly smooth stretch
of trail, not fast, when Gus' horse, Grecian Kelley, took a bad step
and suddenly stopped, holding his leg out in front. Gus feared a
fracture, and Joy raced ahead for help; two treatment veterinarians
were quickly summoned. A trailer was backed more than a half mile down
the trail to pick up the horse, and he was taken to the Marion du Pont
Scott Equine Medical Center at Morven Park near Leesburg, VA, where
X-rays confirmed a compound fracture of the humerus. Surgery and
conservative treatment (stall rest) were discussed as options, but
with small hope for even a pasture sound horse after a lot of
suffering for his horse, Gus made a difficult decision in the horse's
     best interest.

Our condolences to Gus, who lost his friend and a great horse.
