Walking hills is a marvelous way to build muscles in the hindquarters
and back. However, be sure that you're horse has head and neck
reaching out and down with back raised as you march up those hills. If
you're horse raises their head and hollows their back you may be going
up a hill that is too steep for their muscle fitness level. Doesn't
mean don't do that hill, just means that they aren't able to use
themselves well yet at that degree of slope. I used a big sloped
pasture to build up a horse with a weak hindquarter and stifle. I did
serpentinesback and forth across the slope. March up with neck
extended, march slowly down with butt lowered and hindlegs reaching
under and forehand light. Then proceeded to trot work in the same
manner although still walked downhill for sometime.

I have the mare that over reaches at the walk. Would it be possible to
develop, at this walk,
her back muscles since her hindquarters are engaged? What about her back
and using
this walk on hills?
