Several years ago the group of people I travel with to Rides (12-15
riders) began using the portable corrals. Now almost everyone in our
group uses them. One thing I must caution those of you new to this -
keep your pen size SMALL. One or two of our group felt compelled to
make their pen as large as their equipment allowed - which was in excess
of 60 feet on a side. Big mistake. The horses tend to fight (bicker)
more, and if they get spooked, they usually run right through the wire,
hot or not.
We make our pens about 12x12, and keep all the horses in separate
pens, even if they are 'buddy-buddy'. This seems to work really well
for us, and we have never had a horse run through the fence. One of our
geldings does like to amuse himself by flipping the top of the plastic
fence post with his upper lip - we have to keep an eye out that he
doesnt dislodge it and collapse the fence. Other than that, no
problems!
Our battery is in use for several three day trips - we buy a new
battery at the start of each season. It seems the key is a good ground
- carry a box of salt and a jug of water, you can increase the grounding
abilities of the soil by pouring salt water around your ground rod.
