You bring up a good point that we went 'round and 'round about. We finally
ended up with four categories for the sake of ease for the ride management.
The categories were:
Due to horse:
1. Soundness, injury, etc.
2. Metabolic, out-of-gas, not doin' right, etc.
Due to rider:
3. Rider option - Rider injury, rider tired, rider sick, etc.
Other:
4. Management: Out of time, Sponsor pulled, etc.
We felt that this is the simplest list that could be done and still give some
sort of information.
As far as the specifics you mention, the back injury and girth gall would be
soundness issues and the just-not-right would be metabolic, though with close
inspection just-not-right can sometimes turns out to be injury/lameness, such
as how a pulled shoulder sometimes shows up.
Please note that for this survey, whether the rider withdrew or the control
vet had to eliminate the team, it makes no difference. The intent of this
survey is not so much to find out who is a good rider or not, nor is it to
commend or punish anyone. In fact the survey does not have any space for
names or individual rider numbers. All it asks is how many started, how many
finished and of those that did not finish, how many were in each category.
I plan on reviewing this whole post-ride veterinary form, process, education
and analysis. I would invite your suggestions so that they may be presented
to the AERC Board of Directors. The current process has been in effect for
nearly 10 years now. I believe it is time to update this process.
Sincerely,
Mike
