Sounds like there might be some subtle tieing up occurring late in the
ride...the milder form toward the end of the ride. Wonder what the
urine color looks like ? He may be comfortable in the muscles, but the
chemical balance is off, thus the elevated heart rate. Also might look
at calorie/protein intake for the work load your asking the horse to do.
Maybe 3x a week at 40 miles, but some interval work would work, and cut
back to stemmy hay on the off days.
