> Kat: Sorry, you can't even bum a stick of gum..you got to carry it all.
Including hay and water for my horse???!!!
I find it impossible to believe that anybody could carry this on their
horse for 100 miles. That would be close to 30 gallons of water (~250
lbs) and approx 20 lbs of hay! Not to mention the space limitations.
If there were grass along the way that the horse could graze on...fine,
but there is NO way this could be done on one the SW desert rides. There
just ain't that much graze. And besides, many of the areas that we ride
through prohibit the horses from grazing on the natural flora.
Everything else, I can handle, in fact, everything else I do handle as a
matter of course. I suppose it might be possible to carry some kind of
concentrated feed like hay pellets or cubes, but I have never bothered as
I have found that at many rides management provides hay for crewless
riders and if not, I have become adept at "foraging" from other riders,
etc.
Any true cavalryman would have been VERY adept at "bumming" along the way.
So perhaps the award is misnamed.
