Keep this in mind when you are looking in the endurance "who's who" and
stallions. If you are busy breeding your stallion to mares THERE IS NO
TIME TO RACE! There's no time to do anything but BREED MARES.
I could also write a list a mile long on the variables that exist on
endurance race records that have nothing to do with genetics...starting
with MONEY and TIME, competitiveness/savvy of rider, accidents....
We've all seen badly conformed horses eek out thousands of miles, and
"perfect" ones have bad luck and never race again....it is not at all like
TB track racing. >>
Yes indeed. The only addition we would make is that, unless making the
mortgage payment depends upon the # of breedings a ranch gets - this is the
case with too many ranches - then a good stallion CAN do both. Then it comes
down to all of the other factors mentioned. I think a stallion may compete
less and breed less. We like that aspect, since we wanted to breed excellent
quality, not vast numbers. What we have gotten is a beautiuflly competitive,
sweet-tempered stallion with a couple dozen excellent get, who are starting
to compete now, and a most pleasant group of young horses from him. You can
have a good balance, but not if your bank "balance" depends too much on it.
Too bad.
