"NO HANDS" BRIDGE HAS BEEN SAVED
On June 12, 1997, President Clinton signed the disaster relief bill that
includes funding of $700,000 for the stabilization and repair of the
Mountain Quarries ("No Hands") Railroad Bridge over the American River
near Auburn CA.
Thanks to the over 6,500 persons that signed the petition to save the
bridge and to all those that contributed funds for the "Save No Hands
Bridge" account.
Meetings are being scheduled (there is one today) so the procedure can
be developed for the underwater investigation, design and
stabilization/fix in order that work can be completed before the next
winter storms. Divers will be poking around when the River is lowered
during the Western States 100 Mile Run on June 28.
The successful campaign to save the Bridge is truly an example of how
the private sector can work hand-in-hand with government. If you have a
chance, please call Congressman Doolittle (916/786-5560, fax:
916/786-6364, Washington DC phone 202/225-2511)or email
doolittle@hr.house.gov and thank him and Richard Robinson for all the
work they did to get the bill through Congress. A call to Steven
Anderson of the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation (916/989-7273, fax:
916/989-7208) would also be nice as he was VERY instrumental in
coordinating efforts to save the Bridge.
Thanks again to all.
