PAN AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP
JUNE 1, 1997 UPDATE
Mike Foss DVM
Many of you know it takes a lot of things to put on a ride. Land, time,
volunteers, a dose of insanity and of course money. Most of the rides governed
by AERC are able to generate enough money through entries to cover their
expenses, at least in theory. When the theory falls apart the ride managers
usually foot the bills and hopefully absorb less than a
thousand dollars. On the other hand, the Pan American Championships can not
possibly meet all their expenses through entry fees and must come up with
operating expenses from other sources. Enter the SPONSORS! Without sponsors,
these rides would not be possible.
Who are sponsors? Are they large corporations looking for a tax deduction
or trying to get our business? Not hardly. The purchasing power of all the
Endurance riders in the whole nation put together is regrettably small so
"corporate sponsorship" is not very likely. For the
most part our sponsors are your fellow endurance riders, breeders or the
businesses who provide the fantastic goods and goodies they we all use in the
pursuit of a finish. It is essential that we recognize and thank the people who
donate their dollars back into the sport to make it go and grow. Some people
have been fortunate enough to be able to give generously with money. Most of
the rest of us give of our time which sometimes can
be turned into money. We will list our sponsors and donors to date (6/1/97).
Without their generosity, this event would not be possible.
MIKI, Box the sponsor list as a side bar please.

Next time you go to buy something, think about who you are buying from, not
just how much it costs. Try to buy from the people who have supported your sport
through ride sponsorship, ads in magazines like AERC News, donations at
conventions and donations to countless rides. They are putting "your" money back
into "our" sport. Its the best way to say "Thank You!"
The Pan American Championship is now also a World Cup Qualifier Event! If
you want to qualify for the 1997 World Cup Endurance Race you need to plan on
participating in the Pan American Championship either in the Championship
division or the World Cup Endurance Series Qualifying Event open division. More
information is included later in the column under "wORLD CUP - QATAR".
Our official paper work has been approved. A couple of important features to
note are: First, it will be a 24 hour ride!!! Secondly, FEI has come up with
some good guidelines for leasing horses. Horse and rider each (separately) must
have completed a one day 160 km Endurance event before they are qualified to
enter the Championship. Be aware of this if you are involved in leasing. If you
are interested in leasing your horse, Grace Ramsey and Jan Worthington have
been authorized by the OC to help put together leasing arrangements. Ph.
815-845-2494.

NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD
NEW INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
1997 WORLD CUP - QATAR
Jerry Gillespie DVM / AHSA
A World Cup of Endurance has been approved by the FEI Endurance Committee, which
will in concept mirror the WC of the other major FEI disciplines of Jumping,
Eventing and Dressage. Qatar was recently approved as the 1997 host nation for
a "final" to be held in November 28, 1997. The course distance for the final
will be approximately 100 km (60 miles). Up to 64 competitors will be invited
to Qatar to compete. Qatar will provide for the expenses for selected riders in
the final. The United States has the opportunity to send up to 5 riders. FEI
Selection criteria state that: "In order to qualify for participation in the EWC
Final, riders will accumulate points at the EWC Qualifying Events. The 1997 EWC
will use the same point system as that of the FEI-ELDRIC Trophy (km/placing
points and additional points in relation to placed riders). The classification
will be as follows: The best two competitions will score. Riders need results
of (at least) one or two Qualifying Events. The points will not be doubled (not
even if competitions of different countries are included)."
The Organizing committee and the AHSA have approved the Pan American
Championships as a World Cup Qualifying Ride in the USA. Riders selected to
ride in the Pan American Championship can be double entered in both events. The
AHSA and AERC are seeking a second FEI sanctioned ride in the USA that can be
approved as a second WC Qualifying Ride. Having two Qualifying rides will
increase the oportunity for US riders to qualify. World Cup Qualifying Rides
will recieve as much as $5,000 from the sponsor (Qatar) if they meet the
criteria required by the sponsor. Ride managers should contact Jerry Gillespie
DVM (913) 532-4258, or Jennifer Wills (212) 972-2472 if they are interested in
having a WC Qualifying ride. Riders interested in entry requirements for the
World Cup Qualifying rides please contact Jennifer Wills.
ELDRIC REORGANIZATION
At the 1997 ELDRIC (European Long Distance Riders Conference) Convention in
France, the delegates voted to subtly change both the ELDRIC name and
Constitution. It is now to be known as the Endurance Long Distance Riders
International Conference (ELDRIC). With a slightly modified name and amended
voting rights, now equal status within the ELDRIC organization is accorded to
member national organizations worldwide. Previously only European nations could
vote while all other nations could join with "associate" non voting status.
An invitation for full voting membership in ELDRIC has been extended to the AERC
so we too can come under the ELDRIC policy making umbrella. An Associate
membership is still open to organizations. Such members are invited to the
Delegates' Conference. They are not entitled to vote but could be consulted.
Very cautious and deliberate consideration is being given to ELDRIC's invitation
for full membership by the AERC International committee, and the AERC Executive
Committee . There is reason to understand and have sympathy for why the ELDRIC
underwent reorganization instead of remaining a European based organization, but
its current organizational structure and aims may not serve the interests of the
United States with our large national endurance organization and national
federation as well as it serves the needs of countries with small national
endurance organizations and national federations.
It is at times like this that we should all feel blessed to have a large, well
established national organization like the AERC and a strong national
federation like the AHSA working closely and respectfully together to influence
endurance policy at the FEI level.
