Heck I ride Finn with the Ultra Shield fly mask from now till fall.
It's light weight, mosquito netting really so easily seen thru. Not
suitable for turn out though. My suggestion for the sunburned faces is
use the heavier Farnam Fly mask and make a "veil" or visor of cordura
or even the same screening material as the mask. Stitch the veil onto
the lower edge of the fly mask so it will hang down over the nose and
lips. If you cut it in a half moon shape it will not interfere with
grazing and drinking. I've seen the material that the flymasks are
made of at Minnesota fabric. It's used for lawn furniture seats. If
you've ever seen those leather bibs that are hung on the underside of
halters to prevent a horse from using his teeth on blankets and
bandages you'll get the idea of the shape of the visor, only use it on
the top of the nose. Read this idea over on E-L. Can't you just see a
bunch of Arabs running around in veils????

I have ridden with a fly mask on my horses. I got the impression that it did
cut down on their vision a little bit, but probably was worth it to keep the
flies out of their eyes. Feeding supplemental vitamin C MAY reduce the
incidence of cataracts in animals as it does in humans.-Amy
