Another tale of the Camp Far West Ride!

My best bud Sunny and I traveled with the rest of the gang (Mary
Capistrant, Courtney Hart, Mike & Kirsten Berntsen) on Saturday and we
all settled in well (with the help of Miller Time). I, sans crew, began
begging Mike for help during the ride, for a plate of pasta I was able
to shanghai help for the day. Didn't really need it after all....

The day started out perfect, just a touch warm with a nice cool breeze,
perfect riding weather. Sunny is normally a fairly calm horse...except
for the beginning of rides. Then his racing heritage comes out and he
becomes Mr. Snort. We practiced our "Boz Stuff" until several minutes
after the start and before too long he was quiet and responsive. A good
sign! Control! The front runners were off like the Belmont Stakes
(isn't that next week?) and I was very impressed that at the resounding
sound of racing hoofbeats on a gravel road didn't upset Sun into a minor
embolism. We left with the back of the pack and spent a wonderful ten
miles "working it out." He was really "on." No real fighting, even tho
the course was exceptionally easy (after all the rocks at Washoe, Sunny
was having a ball with the so-called "rocky" areas of this ride). He
was on the bit, rounded and we garnered all sorts of praise for his way
of going. He looks great, but riding him is a whole 'nuther ball park.
He has so much suspension that I have chipped teeth.

We did the first loop (21 miles) in under 2.5 hours and we walked in to
the check with a 48 pulse and a happy, hungry and thirsty horse. He
didn't drink much on the trail, but for some reason the camp water was
fine with him. We vetted out immediately with all A's. We ate and
drank for 45 minutes; Courtney said Sunny looked great and go have some
fun. Bad news here for Mary, Tambo twisted her ankle and Mary pulled
her here at lunch. Kirsten was just leaving for the next loop when I
came in, with her look of concentration I knew she was doing well!

What fun we had! He warmed up great after lunch and we were off.
Figured I was going to let him go a little bit and we started cantering
through the meadows with me grinning like a fool in the shade-soaked
trails. He was passing horses and not caring that he left them behind,
he just wanted to see what was over that next hill. Like I said, we
were having the time of our lives. Then, of course, my ol' luck had to
kick in. Let me digress and say we were pulled at April's SASO because
of a weird muscle cramp, then at Washoe 100 I pulled at 75 miles because
Sun was tired (even tho vets said he could go) **and now this**.
Trotting down a very slight hill, I didn't notice the bog at the bottom
and we went butt over teakettle with me sailing into the great blue
yonder. A woman I was riding with also fell and she got hurt. I jumped
back onto Sunny to race into the next check to get her help. But when I
leaned into him, he just groaned and winced. Off I was checking his
legs. Couldn't find anything. But he was lame - and I mean lame as a
duck; head-bobbing lame at the walk. I was terrified, I thought his
career was over right then. Another rider came by and raced to get help
for the hurt woman. Luckily I could see base camp and cross-countried
it over to base. He had warmed up enough that he was sound at the walk,
but grunted and winced at the trot. I was mortified and was trying to
keep from bawling my eyes out.

I got to the trailers and everyone was so excited, Jen and Sun came in!
Then a shake of my head, I was three pulls for three rides. I couldn't
hardly talk, I would have started crying right then. Courtney told me
to go clean him up a bit and then we'll trot him out. I didn't want to,
I didn't want to announce to the camp that my best friend in the world
was hurting because of my stupid ego. Courtney's riding club has new
club shirts, the first time I rode in the shirt, I got pulled at Shine &
Shine Only. The second time, pull at Washoe. The third time, pull at
Camp Far West. I was ready to rip the shirt off my back, "it's a
curse!" I yelled. Then Kirsten meekly peeps up, "well, it's good luck
for me, we got 5th". 5th Place!! Wow! If it wasn't for their
excellent ride, the day would have been a completely wash for me. I
couldn't tell who was more happy; Kirsten that she did so well (and
could finally get off and stretch her back); or her husband Mike, who is
probably the most competitive person I have ever met.

I trotted Sunny out for Courtney, to my surprise he was lame in the rear
end and was tentatively diagnosed with a torn muscle. Out for several
weeks. But it wasn't a tendon or a ligament; and for this I feel that
we dodged a bullet. It was a bad fall. We stayed around for several
hours drinking wine with Ruth and Ron Waltenspiel and before the dinner
I loaded up and left for a long, lonely trip home; with me reliving
every step, every sip of water, every eaten blade of grass, every glance
at the HRM; and of course, the wreck. What had I done wrong? I know
that it was bad luck, but when you get three pulls in a row, you
question everything from your motivation to ask this of your horse to
maybe I should go back to reining.

Monday morning I was back checking out Sunny, to my immense and joyful
relief he was 90% better, with just a slight bob when he jogged
downhill. But he was back to flirting with the mares and letting me
know that he forgave me. I forgot all about retiring him from endurance
and started thinking about out road back to recovery (and Bandit
Springs, and Swanton and, and, and). I was lamenting my "bad luck
t-shirt" story to a friend and she promises I can borrow her good-luck
t-shirt, the one she passed every exam in school with. The only
problem, it's a rock concert picture of Ozzy Osborne holding a ......
well, I won't go there. Suffice to say it would get attention!

Jen & the Sunman (still trying to get that 500th mile)

P.S. GOOD JOB DOROTHY & ELLY! Won't see you at the Boz clinic now -
wah!
