A brief shower Friday night lowered temperatures to unseasonable levels
to begin the weekend events. Five 100 milers set out under a crisp
starlit sky. Betsy Reeves and Karazanna Karisma were the first to cross
the finish line in a time of 13:53. There was a tight race leaving the
last check, with Darolyn Butler/Albanet and first-time 100 mile rider
Mary Fields/Christiansen only ten minutes behind with 14 miles to go.
However, the order of finish remained the same. Albanet was declared
Best Condition with a score of 697 by head Veterinarian Denis Seymore.
Six-thirty was the start time for the 28 riders heading out on the trail
for the 50 mile event. There was a close three way race the last half a
mile with Mike Maul/Baskman's Pecan, Michael Campbell/Solesta Sereya and
Thomas Booth/Ibn Tamm-Rud going full out for the win. Michael Campbell
and Solesta stumbled leaving the race to Mike and Thomas. Mike Maul
riding, Pecan, was able to hold on to their slim lead and win in a time
of 4:22. Thomas placed second with Michael coming in a minute behind to
take third. The fast pace seemed to agree with Ibn Tamm-Rud as he was
judged Best Condition with a 689. Rounding out the Top Ten were;
"Quarter Horse" Sue Phillips/Double H, Russell Broussard/Werbors
Sensation, Mike Jaffe/Lok Wyn Khantalib, junior Hillary Zeigler/Bab
Sheeeba, Lynn Zeigler/Exquizete, Jan Wright/Bab Terah and Emily
Page/Pepper. Twenty-two horses finished the ride.
The Limited Distance ride drew 31 teams for the 25 mile event. Tami
Frederich riding Daca La Iris, was first to reach criteria and also
awarded Best Condition with a score of 707. There were 28 finishers from
this fine field of horses.
