Thanks Amy for speaking up for us silent majority (I believe). I live
on the banks of the Potomac River darn near and I vacinate twice a
summer without problems in my current horse and past horses. The farm
has 50+ horses all vacinated bi-annually at least and haven't seen a
sick horse yet. A few get a little dopey for a couple of days but no
vacine caused illnesses. I do my own shots except rabies and give them
in the hindquarters then go for a good trail ride. Definitely seems to
prevent muscle soreness. I have decided to drop a couple of the
non-critical vacines this year as this is such a healthy barn even
with horses coming and going. All hay produced on farm without
pesticides/herbicides and I do feed minerals and ABC Plus.
Limes disease is a problem in this area. Horses, dogs and people that
I know well have contracted it. I made the decision to vacinate my
dog twice yearly after a couple of barn dogs came down with it. A
friends big Hanovarian got it. Good thing she's a pharmacist because a
lot of pills went down that horse's throat!

Here in NJ, near the Delaware River, my vet recommends vaccinating for PHF
twice during the spring-summer. 3 months apart. This area has had alot of
cases and even if the vaccine is only 80% effective, I would opt to spare
my horses the suffering and possible death from PHF. My horses have not
reacted badly to the vaccine. The trick is to get them moving asap after
the injection. A vet told me this and it has prevented even rhino from giving
them a sore neck! I know it's controversial but in my experience it works.
