Clinic on May 17 in Vancouver, WA and May 18 in Eugene, OR. We look forward to
these events.

One fund-raiser which went of with a BANG was the PAC Benefit dinner in
Everett, WA. This was done by Bob Rawe and the Fish Creek Endurance Team. They
had a fabulous dinner, wild dance and terrific auction. All together they netted
$3400 for the PAC!!! THANK YOU BOB & CO!!!

The support of these people has been great! However we still need about $15,000
in cash yet to meet our budget so if you would like to make a donation please
let me know.

NO THY ENEMY (aka. your competition) - THE TRAIL!

A horse goes lame and has metabolic problems during competition because the
rider misjudged the trail NOT because the rider misjudged other competitors.
The best way to accurately judge a trail is to know it and know it well. So
start studying!...................

Mile 1-7 Dirt road. Desert with pines and junipers. Trail common for start and
finish for approximately 7 miles. Water at what will be Vet Check 7.

Miles 7-18 Trail and jeep track. Desert with pines and junipers. Gradual climb
to Vet Check 1. Water at approximately 10 & 13 miles.

Miles 18-25 "Waist" of an hourglass (10 miles of in-and-out common trail).
Gradual climb for 7 miles with desert giving way to forest. Water at 20 miles.
Spot check (trot-by) at 25 miles; this is the last access to horses by vehicle
until Vet Check 2 (35 miles). Water at trot-by. Some rocky stretches.

Miles 25-28 Remainder of common trail. Steady climb to rim trail (7700 feet).
Some rock

Miles 28-35 North and East Rim Trail around Newberry Crater. Water at 34 miles.
Vet Check 2 at 35 miles; approximate elevation 6700 feet.

Miles 35-43 South Rim Trail. Climb to 7600 feet followed by steep descent.
Fabulous scenery of lakes in crater, obsidian flow, and distant Cascade
Mountains. Water at 43 miles

Miles 43-46 Descent continues on jeep roads.

Miles 46-47 Cinder road sufficiently worn for moderate footing. Vet Check 3 at
47 miles

Miles 47-53 Forest roads with short trail sections. Water at 52 miles.

Miles 53-56 Gravel road with good footing on both shoulders. Vet Check 4 at
large campground (ride site for Paulina Peak Ride). Lots of room, parking,
shade, etc. This is the main "halfway" check. Elevation 4200 feet.

Miles 56-65 Climb to 6200 feet up Paulina Creek Trail. Two wooden bridges.
Access to creek at 2 or 3 points for water. Views of several small waterfalls
and major overlook of Paulina Falls near top. Vet Check 5 at 65 miles.

Miles 65-71 North Rim Trail. Climb to 7700 feet. Rejoin common trail at 71
miles.

Miles 71-74 Descend from rim to spot check on common trail. Water at spot check.

Miles 74-81Continue on common trail. Water at 79 miles. Vet Check 6 at 81 miles
(same place as Vet Check 1).

Miles 81-93 Jeep road through high desert to Vet Check 7. Water at approximately
86 and 90 miles.

Miles 93-100 Dirt road common with start trail, to finish at Stevenson's Ranch.

CREWING INFORMATION: There are 7 vet checks. Access is great to most of them.
Vet Check 2 will have very limited access. Crews will be shuttled into the
check. Once in there they may find themselves there for a while. In fact they
may they may not be able to leave until the vet check is closed. Or they may
have to hike out and leave some gear behind. Vet Check 3 may be similar. When
the snow leaves the high country, we will rework #3 and hopefully improve
access but we will not know that for awhile. All the other vet checks will have
basically unlimited access. Most of these roads will be accessible by 2 wheel
drive vehicles. It is possible to follow one rider to all vet checks with the
exception of #2. In creating teams for managing the ride, we are doing 4 teams
of everything. Four teams gives you complete coverage of all the vet checks
from opening to closing. The teams have ample time to close one check and get
to their next stop well before the riders.

The trail is primarily on National Forest Lands so it is available for riding
once the snow clears! Trail marking will begin September 2 but may not be
completed until Official opening, September 8. Camping is available at a vet
check on the trail. For more info contact Jan Canfield or Mike or Heidi.

Lodging for the 1997 PAC

The OC has made arrangements with several hotels within a short distance of the
ride sight.

USET NEWS

Optimum preparation is the key to success in all sports. Historically part of
each of the
USET's disciplines annual budgets fund training opportunities for its riders to
help
prepare them for the rigorous demands of international competition.

When endurance riding became a USET discipline, we only hoped and asked for help
to fund our off continent World Championship Teams. USET has once again
exceeded our expectations. This year, USET set aside a modest training budget
for endurance riders. At their meeting at the annual convention in Reno this
year, the USET Endurance Discipline committee decided that the best training
opportunity this year for FEI World Championship endurance competition is the
Pan American Endurance Championship. At this event riders and support teams will
have the opportunity to experience the small but significant differences in FEI
rules, the extra demands on their time, and most important how to ride as a team
with fellow riders and to a chef d equipe.

As the Pan American Endurance Championship presents the only opportunity in
North America for US riders to ride and train as a team, the USET Endurance
Committee recommended to the USET Executive Committee that the funds budgeted
for training of Endurance riders be re-allocated as a grant to the Pan American
Endurance Championship to insure that our riders have a venue in which to gain
this valuable experience. Maggie Price, as Vice-President of Endurance,
presented a convincing argument and the grant was approved.

Our deepest appreciation and thanks are extended to the USET for helping the
organizers of the 1997 Pan American Championship, the event this year that best
prepares our riders and support teams to BRING HOME THE GOLD in 1998.
